Paul Shane was a UK comic probably best know for playing Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi! In the 1980’s.

Paul Shane was his stage name, he was born George Frederick Speight in Thrybergh, Rotherham on 19th June 1940. He left school in 1955 to go to work in the mines at Silverwood Colliery until he had an accident slipping on some soap in 1967 pensioning him from the mines. It was only a few of years after this that he became a professional entertainer having been semi-professional for 10 years prior, working in clubs and pubs in South Yorkshire as a singer. He eventually transitioned from singer to comedian aided by his version of Green Green Grass of Home which started off straight but developed into a parody of the Tom Jones version.

Shane had a few small parts on TV shows in the 70’s but his big break happened in 1979 when he was spotted playing Frank Roper in Coronation Street and was offered the part of Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi! Which ran from 1980 until 1988 when David Croft asked Shane to play Alf Stokes in ‘You Rang, M’Lord?’. The show ended in 1993.

Paul Shane sadly died on 16th May 2013 in a hospice in Rotherham leaving behind his three daughters and six grandchildren.
